“Reading through a body of work, and especially something that allows the creator as little time for self-regulation as a daily comic strip, one usually beings to sense through the marginal repetitions and odd details a fairly complex picture of the true nature- the unguarded psychological core- of the artist. The vast majority of us turn out to be deeply insecure, bitter, envious, self-deluded and desperate for attention. Our Great Man, however, aside from a good-natured befuddlement with hepcats and hippies, appears to have almost no trace of inner turmoil. There is a balance, a seeming contentedness with his achievement that is perhaps unavailable to all those unfortunate enough not to be Ernie Bushmiller, and I would credit the almost universal love felt for our man by his heirs in the trade to a longing for that kind of unwavering satisfaction.”
